The Policy Open Comment Period is a mechanism that provides the Georgia Tech campus community an opportunity to have a voice in the policy process on newly proposed Institute policies and when substantial changes are made to existing Institute policies. There are currently three policies open for comment until August 1.

Updated – Family and Medical Leave Act Policy: The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) Policy outlines employee rights and responsibilities regarding job-protected leave for family and medical reasons, ensuring compliance with the University System of Georgia regulations. It covers eligibility, leave entitlements, and procedures for requesting and managing FMLA leave. The Policy has been updated to align with FMLA regulations, clarify leave usage and documentation requirements including Paid Parental Leave and serious health conditions, and streamline definitions by linking to USG resources.

Updated – Leave of Absence Policy: The Leave of Absence Policy the requirements for various types of leaves of absence available to employees at Georgia Tech, ensuring consistent application and compliance with relevant laws. The policy has been updated to clarify GTHR review of medical leave for FMLA/ADA compliance, limit retroactive military differential pay, and require vacation time when sick leave is insufficient for bereavement.

New - Service and Assistance Animal Policy: The Service and Assistance Animal Policy outlines the rights and responsibilities related to the presence of animals assisting individuals with disabilities at Georgia Tech. It ensures compliance with federal and state laws, including the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Fair Housing Act (FHA), and promotes equal access to Institute programs, services, and facilities. This policy clarifies the permitted use of Service Animals, Service Animals in Training, and Assistance Animals (including Emotional Support Animals), and provides guidance on behavior expectations, handler responsibilities, and procedures for removal and appeals. This policy aligns terminology, clarifies expectations, and ensures consistency with federal and state laws and USG guidance.
